New TaKeTiNa Video
TaKeTiNa is notoriously difficult to explain in a compelling way to someone who’s never done it. You kind of just have to try it and experience it for yourself. But a new videos posted on youtube by TaKeTiNa founder, Reinhard Flatischler helps to shed a little light on what this wonderful work is all about.
Mamady Keita Health Update & Medical Donation Fund
Our beloved teacher, master drummer and founder of Tam Tam Mandingue, Mamady Keita was recently hospitalized in France with pulmonary edema, a serious condition of accumulated fluid in the lungs, which is one of the health issues brought on by his congestive heart disease. We are happy to report that he is doing very well and was released from the hospital after a couple of days and has spent the remainder of February chilling out in Brussels. He plans to return home to San Diego in early March.
Mamady wants everyone to know that he is feeling much better and is following doctors’ orders to rest and regain his strength. He intends to resume his workshop schedule in San Diego in mid-March thru April and then begin the Grand Masters Tour with Famoudou Konate in May.
As you might imagine, being hospitalized overseas makes for some pretty big bills. In response to those who have asked how they can help, TTM USA has created a Medical Donation Fund to help with Mamady’s unexpected expenses due to his hospitalization as well as his ongoing medical bills. Since TTM USA is a non-profit organization, donations are tax-deductible in the U.S. Please email info@ttmusa.org if you have any questions. Donations can be made with a credit card on-line through the TTM Marketplace or mailed to: TTM USA, Attn: Medical Fund, P. O. Box 83164, San Diego, CA 92138. 100% of your donation will go directly to Mamady to help with these medical expenses.
Falling back in rhythm with TaKeTiNa
Beginning this week, TaKeTiNa rhythm meditation practice groups are back! Some of you have been missing them — over the last few months we’ve had our energies focused on other projects. (namely West African music – studying, teaching, and travelling.) Some of you may be curious but haven’t experienced TaKeTiNa yet. Others may just be reading this strange word for the first time.
In short, TaKeTiNa is a fun and challenging body-mind, group process for connecting to innate rhythm in a way that can lead to enhanced levels of awareness, simultaneity in perception, and sensations of joy and inner peace. It is a way of using rhythm as a vehicle for a playful, moving meditation.
DrumRise’s Amy and Colleen, along with our friend David are currently in the last 6 months of 3 year teacher training. We’re holding free mini-workshops to practice our skills as we prepare for our certification exams in August. Please visit our MeetUp group and join us for some explorations in rhythm!
DrumRise goes to Guinea
Amy and Colleen are off to Africa! We’re going to study further with our teacher, Grandmaster Djembefola, Mamady Keita (pictured right along with his wife, Monette Marino-Keita and daughter Nasira). We’re looking forward to bringing back a wealth of new music and experiences to share with our students in Atlanta in late January!
Grandmasters Tour Wrap-Up
Famoudou Konaté and Mamady Keita have come and gone from Atlanta. But we suspect they’ll be back. 81 drummers from Atlanta, the southeast, and beyond participated in the wonderful workshops with these living legends and a great time was had by all!
DrumRise has so many people to thank to the success of this workshop. The list is long but we hope you’ll read it and spend a few moments with us appreciating what a community effort it was! So with deep gratitude, here goes – in order of events: [Read more...]
Thanks Druid Hills Presbyterian
We had a great time drumming with the folks at Druid Hills Presbyterian Church last Saturday. A mix of kids and adults, drumming students, church members and local community members and fun was had by all. Hope to be back soon. (Hopefully a cool, sunny day in the fall!)
